Katrina from The Adventures of Ichobod and Mr. Toad fascinates me. What we know of her is that she’s a beautiful gal with a wealthy daddy and many gentlemen in town are trying to court her, including Brom Bones and our “hero” Ichobod. Unlike Brom, she isn’t given any lines, and unlike Ichobod, her desires are not narrated. But I spent a majority of my time watching this film thinking about what she’s about.
She seems to be annoyed with Brom and the fact that everyone’s afraid of him (or maybe I’m reading into it, which is fair, canon or fanon, this is still fun to think about). It seemed to me through the movie that she was using Ichobod in a similar way that Ichobod is using her. Ichobod was interested in her beauty and money, while Katrina seemed to be turned on by the fact that Ichobod wasn’t afraid of Brom.
But that ending fascinates me the most! Katrina and Brom marrying could mean that she’s a silly character without many thoughts (which would be likely given the time the movie was made and how women are/were thought of), but a part of me feels like she knew all-along that she would end up with Brom, and just wanted to have her fun in the meantime! Katrina seemed pretty calculating to me, and extremely interesting.
Maybe I’m thinking too much about this, but I’m starting to really enjoy her as a character. I’m looking forward to watching this movie again.
